So, with that in mind let's talk about the different designs of longboards, and how you can choose the right board for you, with a certain emphasis on the center of style; noseriding.

To set the scene, let’s understand the physics going on under our feet. For a nose ride to function, we need two things; a wide nose providing lift up front, along with the surfboard rail engaged in the wave face for grip and hold, and finally whitewater on the tail countering your weight upfront. We don’t really know how much of each is required, but some of each or a lot of one will often suffice.
The longer the board, likely the more encouraging it will be. So anything 9ft plus will give you the rail length required. Smaller than 9ft boards would work too, but longer just makes it easier.
There are three common outlines in longboarding and they’re each described by where the widest point of the board is located; wide point forward, wide point center, and wide point back.
WIDE POINT FORWARD
A wide point forward board is going to be your most nose ride friendly; especially if you’re learning. Having a big wide nose on the board is going to provide a tonne of hydrodynamic lift helping to counter your weight upfront; allowing you to make more errors in your nose ride timing, positioning or being heavy-footed without the board giving up on you right away. A wide nose will also support you more at slower speeds, like on softer waves. So if you surf mushy waves then this board will also help.
Level: Beginner nose rider-friendly
Example: Wingnut Nose rider
WIDE POINT CENTER
A wide point center or parallel railed longboard as it's sometimes referred gives strong rail engagement, as the majority of the board's length is parallel to the wave face we’re trying to engage into. This particularly helps on steeper or faster waves where we might need some speed and grip whilst nose riding.
Level: Beginner - Intermediate nose rider
Example: Bing Levitator
WIDE POINT BACK
A wide point back longboard is the culturally purest outline. A narrower nose won’t provide as much lift, but it will allow the board to fit in a much steeper and tighter wave. The wide point through the tail creates an almost teardrop shape providing a bulbous wider tail that is often rounded. With less weight up front and a rounded rear outline lets the rider pivot the board with a faster and smoother response, helping a more critical setup for nose riding.
Level: Intermediate to Expert nose rider
Example: Thomas Surfboards Harrison

This is officially my favorite suit to surf in! The Alaia Surf Suit keeps everything perfectly in place so I can focus on surfing without worrying about adjusting anything. I usually pair it with the Scorpion Rashguard, and together they make the perfect set functional, comfortable, and stylish.
I also love wearing it to the beach with my daughter. We can run around, play, and still feel super cute. The material is amazing you can really tell that Erika and the team at September know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to both performance and design.
This is now my summer staple. Feels very cool with the heat when it’s wet.
I’ve recently been surfing in this top and honestly can’t believe how comfortable a rashguard can be. I’m a redhead, so sun protection is super important and this top nails it. The thumb holes offer extra coverage on the backs of my hands, and the higher neckline gives great protection without feeling restrictive.
What really surprised me is how soft it is. So many rashguards feel rough or end up causing more of a rash, but this one is buttery soft and gentle on the skin, even after long sessions in the water. September really got everything right with this piece functional, protective, and super comfortable.
Suit fits true to size and feels perfect in the Honolulu summer ocean! I hope it lasts forever!
Love the print and the fabric. Perfect for diving !
Great top, fits well and true to size. Super soft material. The print is vibrant and detailed. I surfed in it the other day. It was comfortable the whole time and stayed in place.
Great surf top! Fits true to size and is secure. I am a 34C and the S fits my bust well. I do wish the straps had a bit more elastic for extra support but very pleased with the overall fit, comfort, and functionality!
I have been a die hard Lucky Bottom girl for some time now! They are tried and true: Secure, supportive, and stay put so I don’t have to worry about any slips in the lineup. Fit is more moderate but very flattering; material is soft and buttery and very very comfortable. I have multiples of the bottom and while I can wear a XS or S - I will say I prefer the fit of the XS to ensure extra security, especially when wearing these bottoms in bigger waves of consequence. If you are between sizes, I would recommend sizing down!
This top is so good! Super comfy, supportive, and it actually stays in place when I’m surfing or just laying out. The fabric feels really nice and the fit is super flattering. Love the square neckline and the textured fabric. I’ve been reaching for this one nonstop. You can really tell the quality in the fabric!
I love this super cute suit! Double lined so it stays in place while I’m surfing. Awesome color pattern.
Pattern is so cute, fits perfectly, true to size and super Flattering, and for sure the most comfortable bikini i got. Cant wait to have some more September in my closet🌺
I adore this sun crop top/rash guard. The fabric is super soft (I have never tried anything near this soft), and it fits so nicely! Perfect for longer surf sessions in the tropics/during summer, to stay protected from the sun. I used to surf in bikinis only, but this top has been a total game changer now as I want to protect my skin more. The thumbhole detail helps to protect the upper parts of my hands too, and makes it stay in place. Can’t recommend it enough!! Love it!
Really liking to surf in this. The coverage is perfect for me, feels comfortable at all times, it’s buttery but also resistant. I’ve gotten compliments on the cool green pattern too!
This top is exactly what I needed for the right support and a comfortable yet stylish feel (my biggest fear with bikinis is to see my top fly off mid wipeout!). The fabric is very soft and the color is actually super vibrant, I’m definitely loving it.
I really love the fit of these surf shorts! They are high waisted and I love surfing in shorties like these. The color and material is also nice. The only thing I don't absolutely love is the banded elastic waist, just because sometimes it is not the most flattering if you are in between sizes. Mine are really comfy and fit me well, I am a pretty standard medium and they seem true to size. They stay put in the surf and I got lots of compliments on these :) would recommend.
