Continuing on from the hand-painted seafoam camouflage concept that we explored for our first season with New York based surf brand 'SEPTEMBER', SS23 dives a little deeper.

This SS23 capsule is based on a painting called, ʻEvening Stormʼ, by W’menswear designer Lauren Yates. The painting itself was inspired by an unusual camouflage piece that Lauren found, dating back to WWII.

“This ʻEvening Stormʼ painting was inspired by an unusual camouflage piece I found that dates back to WWII. As a designer, I have always been fascinated by the relationship between ʻorder and chaosʼ as inseperable forces of the Universe. To me, surfing is the very act of riding that fine line between the two realms.

The cultural and technological revolutions that came out of war, run parallel to this idea. From the chaos of WWII, women moved into the workforce, found new roles in the family structure, and took adventure sports like surfing to new levels. Marge Calhoun, a self-taught surfer, part-time Hollywood stuntwoman, and mother of two who won the Makaha International in 1958 is an exceptional example of a woman who embraced the social change that WWII brought forth. This painting attempts to honor her legacy.”

Cute but sizing off

This block print one piece is gorgeous and material is wonderful. My only issue is the non adjustable straps and feeling like they loosened too much after a swim in the ocean. I tried suit on and viewed size guide and my measurements align with the guide to a T. I am a D cup, 40 inch band, bought an XL. The support at chest with the straps wet is just too loose. Not looking for uniboob or super compressed, but I do like coconuts vs papayas when active outside. Will likely being sewing straps to tighten, but just a slight bummer.

I have been waiting for this swimsuit for a long time and it did not disappoint!
Right off the bat, this beauty didn’t budge! I did the backstroke, the crawl, and even the risky butterfly– and let me tell you, not once did I need to perform the dreaded "swimsuit adjustment shimmy" post-dive.

The Scorpion top is fantastic! I love the high neck and long sleeves for sun protection. The ribbed texture is a nice touch, and the quality is amazing. It feels so luxurious and super comfy. I've always been a little hesitant about surfing in leggings but after my legs got so sunburnt after a trip Costa Rica, I bought these from SEPTEMBER and have never looked back. They sit high enough on the waist so they don't roll down when I fall and they are snug that they don't bunch up at the knees or thighs when they are wet. Couldn't recommend them enough.
